banana republics

I was told the other day that bananas are $1.00 per kg in New Zealand when they are over $3.00 per kg here in Townsville which is within spitting distance to Tully. And Tully has the banana production wrapped up with some of the biggest farms in Australia.
What is going on. Common sense says we should be getting them a bit cheaper cause of the transport costs.
The same little bird told me the bananas go to the south of our great continent, then of all things return to the north for sale within Australia.
What is gong on?
