I.D numbers

The Australian Government wants to give each child an I.D. number.
So we can keep tabs on their school progress. what is wrong with ringing the school and asking about the kid. Or email, or letter. I can see a few flaws with the idea of a register of children. What happens when they leave school. What is to stop their number from defining their lives.
It is a small step in the wrong direction for civil liberties and freedoms.
Common sense should tell the government that it won't work.
